The Only Moment We Were Alone

This is the beginning of a piece I’m writing for my Creative Writing class. I got inspiration from a song by Explosions in the Sky. I’ve always thought about the story behind the song (even though it’s instrumental)… so I decided to write about it.

It was the only moment we were alone.

Not alone in the traditional sense. But alone in a sense that the world spun round and round while ours sat still. Alone in a sense the neurons of our brains that repeatedly skipped to other parts of our brains collided into the small space that I reserved for you. In that space of my brain I keep our memories, your significance, your past, my past, our future. It’s one of those cliché moments in the movies when everyone else clears out of the scene and there are only two people left in the room. Except as I sat there with our eyes locked, I can still see the rest of the world out of the corner of my mind. But the world no longer scared me. It was no longer a menace. We were alone, separate, apart, isolated from its dangers.
